Finns hiding illegal immigrants

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

hiding.jpgNews today that hundreds of illegal immigrants may be living in Finland with the help of at least one local charity. They are people who are completely helpless, that have maybe been swindled by a smuggler who has taken all their money, and they are penniless, poor, and hungry, just waiting for some kind of help, which does not seem to be forthcoming from the appropraite authorities.

It is positive to see somebody ensuring that these poor individuals do not end up as human traffic or prostitution.

There are also reports that local Evangelical Lutheran parishes are rumoured to have a hand in hiding illegal immigrants - we just hope the immigrants aren’t being brainwashed into the ways of Martin Luther’s religion.

Prime Minister’s SMS messages were published

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Finnish Prime Minister Marti Vanhanen“Prime Minister Marti Vanhanen says that he is considering legal action against the late-edition tabloid Ilta-Sanomat for violation of privacy. The daily recently reported on SMS messages he sent to women.”

That was in today’s Helsinki Sanomat, Finland’s most popular daily newspaper and I have to admit that it made me really worry. If they can take somehow the Prime minister’s messages and then publish them in a newspaper then what really happens with the mobiles? Can you say or text anything without risking others reading your messages and not that I have anything to hide but is just … a weird feeling.

Few years ago somebody robbed my house and I had to move just living with the feeling that some stranger had gone inside my private life, now looking at my GSM I have the same feeling, how many people are listening to what I say or text, analyzing them or anything.

And far more, it was the Prime Minister’s GSM, I don’t know how often he’s using it and what he says, if he’s texting women or other leaders but it sounds so scary.

An Afghan Christian? Kill him!

Friday, March 24th, 2006

An Afghan Christian? Kill him!In Afghanistan Mr. Rahman is on trial charged with rejecting Islam. He could be executed under Sharia law unless he reconverts.

This is from BBC news and I still wondering, is this “respect” to the others’ religion we heard so often over the last few months from the Muslim countries when the controversy about the Mohamed cartoons was still going on?

I haven’t seen any of these hypocrites, mullahs or whatever else they call the ayatollahs, presidents of Iran or others coming out to protest for freedom and the individual’s right to practice his/her’s own believes - one more thing, in Muslim countries, ‘hers’ don’t exist, women don’t have rights or anything - I didn’t see any of all these ‘multicultural’ idealists saying anything.

I have often said that I’m not religious myself but these things makes you wonder what the hell is going on and how the hell people who are talking about respect to the religion are the same ones who can execute somebody just because he/she makes the decision to follow a different religion.

Patience: Ovi Issue 13

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Hello dear Ovi Readers,

I am the administrator of the Ovi Magazine website, Oliver and I have a few words to say:

It seems I have made a few people worry why the new issue hasn’t come online yet. I apologize to all of you if the Ovi hasn’t come out when it should, even if it says clearly in each issue when the next issue is supposed to come out - you will have noticed if you are a regular Ovi reader that this is not always possible since we all do this job on Ovi together with our life’s to-dos.

The last week was a horrible week for me since I had just too many things running at the same time and it got worse when a company that delivers clients to me started making trouble by not paying me for my work and breaking deals I had with them. You can imagine how it feels to be betrayed by your “partners” and they haven’t even got the balls to tell you about it, you just have to notice it by yourself!

Each issue takes me six days to develop and implement all sites. As you can see, each article has a NaviGate under it which takes you to the next site coordinating within the structure of the PDF and all the little details can get pretty confusing when too many things happen in a day, so to say it in a few words:

The Ovi is coming out this week!

A degree in a decade

Monday, March 20th, 2006

mature.jpgEducation officials are worried that students are spending too long on high school studies. The Ministry of Education is considering new laws to pressure schools to encourage students to graduate earlier.

Under the proposals, municipalities might be penalised and lose out on education funding, if students stay in high school for more than three years.

The Finnish education has always confused me, especially the fact that so many students seem to spend nearly a decade getting a degree and they aren’t even becoming a doctor or teacher.

What makes staying at school so attractive to so many students? Do they get substantial interest free loans or are they sleeping with the lecturers? Perhaps if they remain classified as students it keeps Finland’s unemployment figures down.

Wanted: Large meeting room

Sunday, March 19th, 2006

eu_islam.jpgAccording to Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, one of the two EU summits during Finland’s term as EU president could be held in Finland. Vanhanen says a decision has not yet been made on the matter, but Finland has not been excluded from consideration.

The summit location is currently being decided and will depend upon several factors, including availability of interpreters and space.

Come on Matti, flex your muscles and demand the meeting to be held in Finland. It would raise the profile of the country and give you a chance to sauna naked with other EU leaders.

If you know of a suitable meeting room for rent, please contact Matti on the usual phone number.

We’re safe from bird flu…but not

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

rubber_chicken.jpgFinnish officials have made plans to ensure that all residents of the country will be vaccinated against the effects of the bird flu in the case of an impending pandemic.

Phew!

Plans are based on the assumption that during the first eight weeks of a pandemic, 35% of the population would become infected. Of those, 11,000 - 36,000 would require hospitalization and 3,500 - 9,000 would die.

What? First we’re promised to be vaccinated and then some people still die?

Oh, I see. The 3,500-9,000 are the foreigners who don’t understand Finnish and miss the public health annoucement.

Our advice: If you see a long queue, join it.

Where’s the Finnish Green Party?

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

nuke_plant.jpgNews today that Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority gave permission to restart concrete production at the site of the fifth nuclear power station in the country was received with a disturbing silence.

Where are the Green Party politicians shouting that the environment is far more important and should be respected? Where are the protestors now that building has resumed?

What’s the point! They are all far too busy to bother with something as minor as the building of a nuclear power plant, sorry the FIFTH nuclear power plant, in Finland.

Child poverty in Finland

Monday, March 13th, 2006

According to a UNICEF report from last March, Finland and Demark have the least number of children suffering from poverty in the industrialised world. Sadly that number is still too high with Finland’ number standing at 130,000 in 2003.

The number of children living in foster care is around 14,000, a number considered high by STAKES.

The Finnish government says it is trying to help those suffering from economic hardships, but what can it really do to ease the situation?

Thoughts

Friday, March 10th, 2006

I would like to share with the ovi some nice thoughts I’ve found online. Hope you like them! :)

It isn’t the mountains ahead that wear you out, it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.

You never miss the water until the well runs dry.

The people who live in the Golden Age usually go around complaining how yellow everything looks.

It is easier to fight for one’s principles than to live up to them.

There is a foolish corner in the brain of the wisest man.

If it is to be, it is up to me.

A bend in the road, is not the end of the road… unless you fail to make the turn.

A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove… but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed… Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle
…when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.

Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward orgaizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.

Some people dream of success… while others wake up and work hard at it.

Some people make things happen, some watch things happen, while others wonder what has happened…

Keep your head and your heart in the right direction and you’ll never have to worry about your feet.

Nothing in this world is impossibe to a willing heart.

History repeats itself. Historians repeat each other.

He who tries can fail. But he who doesn’t try, already has.

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment.

Half the misery in the world is caused by ignorance. The other half is caused by knowledge.

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

You should never wear your best trousers when you go out to fight for freedom and truth.

Always do right, this will gratify some and astonish the rest.

Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

That which the fool does in the end, the wise man does in the beginning.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Why do you need two coats when you have only one back?

Today is the first day of the rest of your life ==> make it the best day since the beginning of your life and may tomorrow bring sunshine into it.

Learning is weightless treasure you always carry easy.

There are too many sad things in this world. Don’t walk away from the happy ones.

It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well.

Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.

Animals do not smoke, drink nor take drugs - except in laboratories.

Open seven days a week, excluding Sundays!

Either you give me what I demand or I’ll take what you’re offering!

Opinions expressed here are mine and not those of ovi. And if you don’t agree with them, you are racist, sexist, elitist, imperialist, Baptist, and possibly even right.

The only thing you need to know about a country is whether people are trying to get in, or get out.

We must not fear daylight just because it almost always illuminates a miserable world.

Always forgive your enemies. That’s what they hate most.

What ‘exists’ is only a small part of what is ‘possible’.

Do not let big ambitions overshadow small successes.

Since I am convinced
That Reality is in no way
Real,
How am I to admit
That dreams are dreams?

In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can inspire.

Yesterday is History, tomorrow is a Mystery, today is a Gift, that’s why it’s called ‘The Present’

A mind stretched by a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.

That which is beautiful is not always good. But that which is good is
always beautiful.

Only two kinds of people complain about taxes - men and women.

He who has a thing to sell
And goes and wishes in a well
Will not as likely get the dollars
As he who climbs a tree and hollars.

Sooner or later, everyone stops smoking.

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

There are no explanations for human evil. Only excuses.

President Bartlett optimistic

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

bartlett.jpgA US company is set to begin a trial of a vaccine which it claims halts the progress of multiple sclerosis.
MS experts have welcomed the research but urged caution because other vaccines have not been successful.

Does this mean that President Bartlett might be back for an eighth season of West Wing?

Hamas leader wins Oscar?

Is that George Clooney in Syriana on the left and Khaled Mashal, leader of Hamas, on the right?

Spooky!

Ice-ly done

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

ice.jpgMore than 1000 people gathered in the town of Oulu, in the far north of Finland for the World Championship Winter Swimming. The main aim of the competition is not just who is the fastest swimmer, but mainly who can stand being in the freezing conditions the longest.

Lewis Gordon Pugh from Great Britain won the endurance race of 500 metres, while it was even a test for the audience who had to watch from a stadium built of ice, in temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius.

I am proud to be a Brit living in Finland today! Nice one, Mr Pugh!

Seal Hunt Protest

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

Ex-Beatle joins seal hunt protest.

Sir Paul McCartney and wife Heather back the storm of protest over Canada’s annual harp seal cull.
source:Reuters

The more I look at the horrible pictures of seals being murdered in a unhuman and brutal way, the more I wan’t to forget these images.

I am glad to hear some people are protesting against this, but what I’m not glad about is that it hasn’t done any good until today. Can’t just someone create a kind of gang that hunt’s these seal hunters? I’d think it be pretty fair to see them do the same thing to those people that take of the skin of the seals while still alive.

If I had money, I think I’d start investing it in punishment more than help for people that are dying, because I don’t see much worth in this world to grow up children when people like the Canadians are still around to behave like disgusting animals.
